Can We at Least Agree on This? (Lyric / Poetry)

by

Can We At Least Agree On This?
(c) 2012 Jon Trott / Music for Dystopians, Inc.

Listening to Boney M sing about Zion’s Daughter
Watching Gaza Mother hold her remains after slaughter
I wish I had the Spirit of Christmas instead of breaking down
Words from another piece of trash blown street-wise in this town
But

Can we at least agree on this?
Can we at least agree on this?
Isn’t love what we want?

Murdering innocents in the name of the nation state
Is the way of Empire when childbirth threatens potentate
I know I’m right and that means you’re wrong this time
I know I’m right and that justifies each and every crime
But

Can we at least agree on this?
Can we at least agree on this?

Each and every one thinks he’s got God and truth to sell
Which of course insures that somewhere a human being’s in hell
I know I know my words won’t change a single angry heart
Letting go of righteousness is the hardest thing to truly start
And

Can we at least agree on this?
Can we at least agree on this?

There is none righteous no not even a single one
Strap on your armour, bring your rockets, bring your gun
Bethlehem is under siege and the Holy Land is eye for eye
Pilate asks the questions and Christ’s silence answers why

Can we at least agree on this?
Can we at least agree on this?
Isn’t love what we want?

Damnable hypocrites to the last solitary soul
First world third world all making up lies to pretend we’re whole
God is not mocked and we harvest crops of cruel pain
Love pleads with us in wisdom so we crucify him again

At least we agree
At least we agree
At least we agree… on this.
