The Long Way to God
(c) Jon Trott, October 2012
Be wary of the words you speak, friend
Take care for truth and don’t pretend
You know so much when you should know less
Trade owning the certain for tenderness
The long way to God is a way no less
The road she travels is stoney and hard
Few there be on it who her life will guard
You see her wrong but seeing are blind
The journey she’s chosen remains on His mind
The long way to God not chosen to find
Yes there are some who go soon and straight
But others they struggle and ever are late
You baa with the 99 but forget the one
Wandering and suffering for what she has done
The long way to God is a way still begun
I saw the gate broken the tower on fire
Love left the building made room for hire
Five husbands before this and she’s not his wife
She waits at the well for the water of life
The long way to God is as sharp as a knife
Who will speak to the sinner when she will hear
Who will dare to approach when none draw near?
He seeks her far lost on the rocks in the thorn
He seeks and will find her no matter forlorn
The long way to God is a pathway well worn
The long way to God is a pathway well worn
Such a long dying and crying to be born
On his patient shoulders see her now borne
The long way to God is the way she came home.
